WORKFORCE SUPPORT

West Vic Division continues to be at the forefront of recruitment and retention through a case management approach of matching applicants with practice vacancies. Advertising for Australian trained doctors is ongoing but there has been a significant increase in Overseas Trained Doctors (OTDs) attracted to our Division. Over 60% of the GP workforce in the West Vic Division obtained their basic medical degree from overseas.

A consistent case management approach working with the following agencies:

  • Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)
  • Medicare Australia
  • Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV)
  • Rural Doctors Association (RDA)
  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)
  • Department of Health (DoH)
  • Department of Health and Aging (DoHA)

This has enabled West Vic Division to maintain the necessary skill to navigate the various requirements to attract and establish a doctor into Australian rural general practice. West Vic Division has supported thirteen GPs and their families within the Division to become Australian permanent residents.

West Vic Divisions aim to increase the GP workforce within the Division, to do this the Division provides:

  • A case management service for practice vacancies
  • Supports to link medical students and registrars with Division of GPs
  • An accessible locum placement service
  • Recruitment of overseas trained doctors
  • Filling of casual and short term vacancies
  • Negotiation and other support services to GPs when dealing with hospitals and their health agencies
  • Support for a spouse liaison program within the Division
  • Resources to support the Practice Managers’ Group
  • Information distribution and consultation with members on key health and medical issues, as they arise.

West Vic Division trialled a Peer Support Program for new doctors coming into the Division especially where they have had little or no exposure to the Australian health system. With the positive feedback from the trial this program is now being offered to all new GPs recruited to the Division.
