Beaufort is a historic gold mining town located on the Western Highway, 158 km north-west of Melbourne, between Ballarat and Ararat, with a population of approximately 1200 people. The area is involved in the production of wool, farming, forestry, quarrying and mining. Beaufort was first explored by Major Mitchell in the 1830's. In 1852 gold was discovered, with the population at one stage reaching an estimated 10,000. Beaufort offers a serene environment with a good shopping centre, whilst providing most services including both primary and secondary school education. It has excellent sporting facilities - golf, bowling greens, tennis, squash, cricket, basketball, croquet, football, netball, and little athletics.

Beaufort Lake and nearby Lake Burrumbeet offer camping, caravaning, fishing, boating and rowing.

Further attractions to this pretty town are the Mt Buangor State Park and Mount Cole State Forest which are located to the north-west of Beaufort. These State Parks/Forests comprise 2630ha and 1130ha respectively and offer extensive walking and four wheel drive tracks, as well as some wonderful picnic areas.
