Kaniva is located on the Western Highway approximately half-way between Melbourne and Adelaide and some 18 km east of the South Australian border. A feature of Kaniva is the abundance of underground water that supports extensive lawns and gardens. The surrounding farms run cattle and sheep and also grow a variety of cereal crops and seed for harvesting.

The township of Kaniva boasts a modern shopping centre comprising two banks, Post Office, bakery, pharmacy, two supermarkets and other retail and service businesses that cater for most of the community’s needs. Two hotels, two motels, caravan park and two host farms accommodate visitors and tourists.

Kaniva has a kindergarten, primary and secondary schools and an Adult Learning Group. Community clubs include Senior Citizens, Apex, Lions and Rotary.

The Kaniva Local Times is published weekly. Visitors to the town will find the Tourist Information and Art-Craft Centre, Historical Museum, Fauna Park and Urban Forest Reserve and Herb Farm well worth a visit. There is also a concrete factory that produces a range of garden products that are sold throughout Australia. Close by are the Little Desert National Park and Big Desert Wilderness Park. These areas are renown for their natural beauty and wildlife and are accessible throughout the year.

The sporting enthusiast is well catered for with both indoor and outdoor facilities. The Kaniva Sporting Complex offers indoor cricket, basketball, badminton, squash, table tennis, volleyball and tennis. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose between lawn bowls, hockey, cricket, football, tennis (lawn & hard-court), golf (licensed club house) and swimming. There is a rifle range and gun club for shooting enthusiasts. Water sports and fishing can be enjoyed at lakes 50 km away.

Medical Services Kaniva has a solo practice which is situated next to the hospital.

Kaniva hospital operates 11 nursing home and 6 acute beds. It also provides District Nursing services, pathology collection, (which goes to Horsham) and X-ray, a radiographer visits from Nhill weekly. Visiting health services are Dietetic, Diabetic, Podiatry, Social Work, Dental, Palliative Care, Speech Therapy, Drug & Alcohol, Optometrist, Community Nursing, Women’s Health, Youth Sexual Assault, Linkages, Geriatric Psychiatric , Association for the Blind, Physiotherapy, Royal Blind Society, Continency Management and Aged Care Assessment (ACAS).

Aged care facilities include a Retirement Village, Hostel for the aged, a Day Centre and Nursing Home. The Shire provides Home Care services and a Child and Maternal Health Nurse. Kaniva also has a pharmacy and volunteer ambulance service. A geriatrician travels from Ballarat as required. Any surgery is referred to Nhill Hospital. Other referral centres include Horsham, Adelaide and Ballarat.
